Elemental Sulfur is organic, safe, and slow-acting. It relies on soil bacteria to convert the sulfur into sulfuric acid, a process that takes months. This is what our calculator assumes you are using.
Aluminum Sulfate works instantly but is easy to overdo and can cause aluminum toxicity in plants. Use it only for blue hydrangeas, not for edibles like blueberries.
2. The “Safety Speed Limit”
Never try to drop your pH by more than 1.0 point per season. If you try to go from 8.0 to 5.0 in one day, you will create a chemical shock zone that kills beneficial bacteria and burns roots. If the calculator recommends a high dose, split it: half now, half in 3 months.
3. Mix It In
Sulfur works best when incorporated into the top 6 inches of soil. If you are applying it to established plants (top dressing), gently scratch it into the surface and water it in well.
